The North Shore News reported today of a recent rash of burglaries in the quiet and affluent suburb of West Vancouver. 17 break-ins have occurred in the span of just a few weeks with thieves plundering “laptops, jewelry, iPads and cash” during broad daylight. Many residents are no doubt surprised to hear of a crime wave in their comfortable and close-knit neighbourhood. But as Cpl. Fred Harding points out in the North Shore News article, the sense of security enjoyed by residents of areas like West Van can make them a target for thieves. “The fact that West Vancouver has one of the lowest crime rates in Canada,” says Harding, “can make some residents complacent about setting alarms and locking up properly,” giving burglars an open invitation to make off with their valuables.
Incidents like this should encourage homeowners to reevaluate their residential security measures. We all like to trust in the safety and security of our neighborhoods, but stories like this remind us that even in areas of relative low crime we still need to be vigilant about preventing loss of property and diminishing risk to personal safety. This doesn’t have to be a grand undertaking: by selecting the right home alarm system and taking some simple steps to enhance the security of your home you can go a long way towards ensuring the safety of your family and the protection of your valuables.
A residential security system from Optimum Security and Reliance Protectron provides state-of-the art protection backed by extensive research into how home invasions occur and how they can be most effectively prevented. With voice response technology and private guard response service, break-ins are detected immediately with fast and effective response. Many thieves will try to cut the phone lines to your residence to prevent detection, but our wireless systems allow us to monitor your residence no matter what happens.
In addition to equipping your home with a trusted Reliance Protectron security system from Optimum Security, there are other important steps that you can take to deter break-ins, increase your personal security and minimize losses. Visit the Vancouver Police Department’s website to learn about more simple measures to make your home more secure.

Burglars Say that Security Guards Are #1 Deterrent
If you’re a business owner, chances are you have thought long and hard about how to most effectively prevent break-ins. Although there are a number of technologies that can help you monitor suspicious activity or notify you in the event of a break-in (like CCTV and alarm systems), you should also think about what measures might be taken to deter criminal activity in the first place. After all, catching a burglar is great, but not having to deal with a burglar at all is better.
When thinking about how to deter burglars from targeting your property, it helps to get inside the mind of a criminal. In a recent academic study on commercial burglary, a group of 27 inmates—former burglars—were interviewed to determine their motives and behaviour during break-ins. When asked which security measures would deter them from undertaking a burglary, most of the inmates had just one answer: security guards. 67% of respondents said that seeing a security guard stationed at a business would send them in search of another target (compare that to just 20% that said alarm systems were a deterrent).
It’s compelling to hear this information coming straight from the burglars’ mouths. It might—and probably should—get you thinking about adding guard services to your overall security strategy. But what if having your business watched over by full-time security personnel is outside your budget or beyond the scope of your security needs? At Optimum Security, our Mobile Patrol Services can save you money by offering professional security guard presence only at certain key times. With careful consideration of the individual security profile of your business, guards will arrive to monitor your premises when it’s most vulnerable, putting burglars on high alert, and giving them reason to think twice before targeting your property. Contact us today to get started planning a mobile patrol strategy for your business.

Ghosts and goblins might be scary, but on Halloween night, the real threats are far less supernatural. Crimes like vandalism, burglary, and assault see an increase during this hectic season, when fireworks displays and alcohol-fuelled celebrations set the stage for criminals to make their move. It is important for homeowners, businesses and events to be on guard against this kind of behaviour. While the RCMP have stated that they will take additional measures to help protect the public on Halloween, here are some crucial steps for preserving your safety and security this week.
· If you’re hosting an event, consider Optimum’s professional security guard services. Don’t let a few bad apples spoil your spooky celebration.
· Consider Optimum’s Mobile Patrol service for your business to ensure that your hard-earned property is protected from vandals and thieves
· If your children are trick-or-treating, make sure that they travel in groups with adult supervision.
· If children are trick-or-treating alone, instruct them to only approach to well-lit houses in familiar neighborhoods, and advise them to never enter houses.
· Carry a flashlight, dress in reflective clothing and avoid jaywalking.
· If you have a home alarm system, be sure to set it before leaving your house. Ensure that all doors and windows are secured.
If you have any additional security concerns this Halloween, contact Optimum Security. We have a wide range of services to help keep you, your loved ones and your property safe from what goes bump in the night.
